RAMBLINGS: JOHN TUSHER

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

John Tusher founded Velocity Art and Design in 1999. His beliefs reflect the personal values and style of doing business that guided John from the start. Velocity Art and Design is comprised of knowledgeable, helpful, and dedicated people passionate about continuing this vision.  It is a business committed to enriching lives through the life-enhancing elements of art and design. A comprehensive website, curated Seattle showroom, and supplemental social endeavors, each in their own way, promote the importance of creativity and quality. Home furnishings and artwork embody standards of innovation, accessibility, humor, responsibility, and visual joy.

I couldn't be more proud to call John one of my closest and dearest friends, he continually inspires me both in life and in design.  I couldn't ask for anything more!

What is your greatest extravagance?
Flying first class, especially internationally, even though it’s through my air miles, I still feel like a rock star. Have you ever been tucked into bed at 35,000 feet with a glass of Champagne, pajamas and slippers? Yeah, it’s pretty amazing.

What career would you pursue if you weren’t doing what you do now?
I would be living part time in Los Angeles and working in the industry on a doc-dram-edy tv show with my best friend. Actually, I think that still might happen WHILE doing what I’m doing now. Why not have it all?

Which living person do you most admire?
I don’t know about most admire, that’s really tough to limit it down to one. I really admire people that follow their dreams, or create something original through their hard work. I admire people who seemingly do things with a sense of humor and don’t take themselves too seriously. I would say someone like Tina Fey, but I don’t know her personally, and she might be an awful person right? I admire people who do things in the face of others telling them that they can’t or shouldn’t. Everyone told Tom Ford not to make movies, but did you see A Single Man? Tom Ford and Tina Fey? Those are terrible..this question is too hard.. next…

What three things can’t you live without?
My son, my king Charles cavalier Rocco, and my friends.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Massages, wine, and a long bath. I’m a secret-unabashed-sensualist. I think I might have been a cat in another life.

What is your favorite color combination?
This changes like the weather, but I’m still really loving grey as a base with a color for accent..like brass. Always with plenty of wood.

What is the favorite room in your house, and why?
Seeing as how I’ve just moved into a new, fairly cookie cutter apartment, it’s not quite decked out yet. I will say that I love my little entry nook library/desk. I can’t live without my design library, but it also houses my small, but sentimental globe collection, a seascape painting by my Nana who was a painter, a foo dog that she had her entire life that I played with as a boy, a few rare couture Adler vases from the beginning days of Velocity, my music collection, photos, etc. It’s amazing how much of a person’s life you can squeeze into a 4 x 6 space.

john-bookcase

john-desk

What is the most memorable event you’ve attended and why?
I would have to say the birth of my son. That was a powerful and unforgettable experience to finally meet such an amazing person.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
That I started Velocity in my basement selling Beanie Babies on ebay. Oh yes, it’s true.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Pessimism, dishonesty, tardiness (in myself and others), and dishes in the sink.

I think the biggest thing this little list of questions will make you realize about me is that I can be all over the board, and yet have a laser focus when needed, although obviously I forgot to pay the laser-focus-bill when it came to answering these. It was fun though!

EASTER TABLETOP

I love how spring is a time for renewal and rebirth and to watch the seeds of the New Year begin to flourish. Which makes Easter such wonderful time to gather with friends and loved ones to share this sense of hope. The holiday is one  that I always look forward to and I thought I'd share one idea for a bright and festive tabletop for an Easter Brunch.

I wanted to create something that reflected the gorgeous transformations occurring within nature during this time of the year. With that in mind I sought out natural, neutral textures to really let the food shine and re-usable or sustainable products. Using proper table linens and napkins will not only make your table feel more complete but it also eliminates all of the waste of paper napkins and tablecloth. The organic bamboo veneerware replaces the traditional paper plate for eco-friendly entertaining; they are sturdier than paper, compostable and biodegradable!

THANK YOU, ENTREPRENESSES!

Just wanted to send out a quick note thanking CRAVE Seattle and all of the lovely attendees of this past weekend's business chat. It was wonderful to be able to share my experience and offer (hopefully helpful) advice to budding female entrepreneurs.

(Smock. thank you note)

Thank you so much to Kathy who owns and operates her own web hosting business, Oval Eye which caters to women in business, for your kind words!  And another big thank you to Margo Myers who also attended. Margo is a woman I truly respect and admire so it was an honor for her to be there on Sunday.

It was inspiring to be in a room full of women with that much creativity, drive and ambition!

ALTERNATIVES TO HEADBOARDS

I'm always on the hunt for fresh and new perspectives on traditional pieces of furniture as it has long been a priority of mine. Why do the safe and expected when you can create something unique that better communicates who you are? One piece that lends itself particularly well is your headboard.  Too often, too little thought is given to it other than 'I like it or it matches my current design.'  Doesn't the crown to your bed deserve a little more consideration than that? I bet it your bedroom thinks so!

Here are a few alternatives to headboards that I found while searching around via bing that are simple and easy to execute yourself but will make a dazzling impact on your decor.

One of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to create an alternative to a headboard is by painting the wall behind it.  I love the idea of a trompe l'oeil effect in these two adding the visual interest of a headboard without losing any floor space!

If simple is not your cup of tea and you want more grandeur and drama for your bedroom, then a large gilded mirror will convey that and more. I absolutely love this look!

I found this delightful DIY on Design*Sponge that's perfect if you are drawn to the look of wrought iron headboards but would prefer the comfort of one that is upholstered. I think it's absolutely darling.  You can find the full DIY here.

Another idea utilizing paint is to create a distinction behind the bed with a pattern or even amidst one! I love how this room fuses this idea with a new preoccupation of mine: patterned wall paint.

I hope this helps to light a little fire to try the unexpected, believe me, it's always worth it!

CHANEL FALL/WINTER RUNWAY SHOW

Karl Lagerfeld and his work at Chanel never cease to amaze me and this runway show premiering his designs for Fall is certainly no exception. The chic reinvention of Coco in cold weather was a jaw-dropping interplay of faux fur with exquisite knits. The runway itself was as extravagant as anything that came down it with giant chunks of actual iceberg, reportedly transported from Scandinavia, that formed the frozen landscape around which the models splashed through the snow melt.

I love the North Pole interpretation and transportation of the classic Chanel tweed suit.

The icicle inspired crystal necklaces and chunky, glinting rings have already sparked a few tabletop ideas for next winter. And those fabrics and textures are just extraordinary! Imagine pillows or throws sewn from them by the fireplace.

CHIANG MAI TABLETOP

As you all know, I'm head over heels in love with the Chiang Mai Dragon fabric from Schumacher, (just take a look at my header!) as well as being in the midst of plans for redesigning my dining room which has two chairs upholstered in the fabric, so strumming my fingers thinking about those two things sparked a tabletop idea that I sketched out below.

The Inspiration:

The Tabletop:

I think the Asian influence lends itself to a chic and elegant dinner party. I love the combination of gold with coral for Spring - I think it radiates a bright freshness. And the pagoda shakers and crystal dragon add a sense of whimsy which I often like to include.

FIELD TRIP: PACIFIC GALLERIES

Seattle is a remarkable city for the hunt - no, not big game - for antiques! I'm constantly surprised by the little treasures that I find here and since Seattle is a relatively young city, it's not unusual to quickly learn the provenance of a piece. Unearthing that history is an important aspect of what attracts me to an object, it helps me feel connected to it and to its previous owners.  There's a part of me that hopes that somehow it gets cosmically communicated to them that I will be a proud and loving caretaker of the piece. Recently, I took a little field trip to Pacific Galleries and made a handful of great finds.

Why yes, I think I will!

This African feather headdress is just gorgeous - I love the color!  I'm thinking about something like this above the mantel in my living room.

The ruched upholstery of this sofa is amazing, I love this technique and hope to incorporate it into a project soon.

This mirrored bar is from the infamous Tropicana Hotel in Vegas, I've been lusting after it for months!

I've been on a little bit of a bust binge lately, though I haven't actually purchased any, I'm just continually drawn to them. I'm playing with the idea of spraying one out in a pop of color for my library or dining room.

A little bit bigger than a flip cam but I could get used to it!

Oh Coco, I find you wherever I go! Love these sexy peep toe heels in one of my favorite color combinations.

If you're a fan of vintage dishware like me, estate sales and antique shops are just so enticing.

I love this framed vintage bathing suit! Such a great, unique idea that places design history in a new perspective.

I was starting to feel a little "Grumpy" because I found so many things that I wanted to take home that were way to big for my pocket book!  Pacific Galleries is truly one of my happiest places on earth.

DIFFA: DINING BY DESIGN NYC

It has long been a dream of mine to create a table for Dining by Design, one of DIFFA's annual fundraising events in NYC. The event is so clearly in line with my passion, to empower and connect with people through design and entertaining, that I'm always thinking of what my contributing design would be. I love how its an opportunity for designers to showcase and produce anything from elegance to innovation to complete fantasy! Its up to them to create everything in the experience: walls, furniture, tablescapes and lighting. I am dying to create something for this event!

I wasn't fortunate enough to make it out to NYC to see it this year but luckily Guest of a Guest satisfied my need for a fix with great coverage and the below photos.

RAMBLINGS: ROSANNA BOWLES

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

If Rosanna Bowles ran the world, everyone would gather around each evening and enjoy a delicious meal passed around the table on exquisite dishes while laughing, talking and sipping glasses of red wine. She believes that dining together is a giving, loving—and truly fun—experience. In her opinion, entertaining can be effortless and elegant, and nearly any occasion is cause for a celebration, from major milestones to the smallest of moments. Fresh from studying abroad and college graduation, she started her own business, Rosanna Inc., and naturally it was tableware. Today, Rosanna's international business is run her out of a teeming warehouse in Seattle, Washington. Rosanna's tableware crosses cultural boundaries, delighting people worldwide and encouraging the art and soul of entertainment-connecting with others and sharing memories along with food and drink. In addition to her lovely 2010 Spring collection, she has just released her book, Coming Home: A Seasonal Guide to Creating Family Traditions.

Rosanna is a woman I've long admired not only for her design and entertaining style but also as a woman who has built a successful local business and turned it into a national brand.

DINING ROOM REDESIGN UPDATE #2

It's been a busy couple of weeks running around and working on various projects so I haven't had as much time or, frankly, money to focus on the redesign of my dining room. I thought I had made my mind up but, as you all know, there's always something new that catches the eye.

So far, I've painted the walls in a gloss black to complement my head chairs which are upholstered in the Schumacher Chiang Mai Dragon Print that I love.

schumacher-dragon

For my side chairs, I'm going to reupholster them from the camel colored cashmere to tufted coral with white piping similar to what I've mocked up below. I think the coral will accentuate the colorway of the dragon perfectly.

adjusted-chair

I'm fortunate in that I have lovely built-in cabinets with glass-paned doors.  I've kept them white as a contrast to the glossy black walls and came across the idea of placing patterned wallpaper inside for an additional visual pop. I'm still deciding on what pattern to use...  Here's an example from DecorPad.

4d670d08dd6a

Currently, the only wall decor I have hanging is a gold regency style mirror and I want to add a bit of whimsy. I've always been a fan of pop art and it's king, Andy Warhol, so I'm thinking of adding a Warholian portrait. Since I can't have the Jackie O painting maybe it will be one of my beloved terrier Mikey.

jackie

Adding to the bright accents and pop art, I'm on the hunt for just the right accessories that I can add my own twist to, like a traditional candelabra to spray out or pieces of porcelain with a touch of attitude. I'm keeping my eyes open!

Obviously, my to do list is still long but I'm excited to jump back in!  What would you do in your dining room?

KELLEY'S CONFESSIONAL: ANOTHER LIGHT BULB MOMENT

Since returning from my business trip to LA, I've been researching and soul searching as I make my next steps in my career.

DIY HANGING FLOWER BOUQUETS

Remember way back when you'd leave notes in your friends' lockers or maybe pull a knock and run prank on their parents' front door? Here's a more civilized but just as fun way to bring a smile to your friend's faces now that we're all grown-ups.  Leave them a bouquet of flowers hanging from their door!  It's a really simple DIY that will take just a few minutes and supplies that you already have around the house and, who knows, it may lead to an invitation to swing by and enjoy a nice bottle of wine.

Supplies
8 ½ x11 card stock
Wrapping Paper
Glue/Spray Adhesive

Stapler
Ribbon

008_550

Adhere your favorite wrapping paper to a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 card stock and let it dry. Fold the card stock into a cone shape and either glue or staple into place. Cut two holes on either side of the top of the cone to run the ribbon through and knot it against the edges for the handle.  Create and affix a personalized note. Place any flowers you love in the cone and deliver!
