HAPPY HOUR: APPLE BRANDY SIDECAR

Since Fall has officially arrived it is time to start looking for signature cocktails for Fall soiree's! Since it is still fairly nice here in Seattle, 70 degress in September, I decided to keep things cool with an organic Apple Brandy Sidecar from Twist in Hyde Park.

HALLOWEEN IS AROUND THE CORNER

Last year I had a fabulous opportunity to work with Eddie Ross and Michael Russo to do a Halloween special for HGTV. I found out via Twitter yesterday that HGTV is re-airing the special and has posted it again on their website. It was a great experience!

My team and I worked very hard to create a Halloween party that would make an impact. I decided we would tell a story by re-creating the story of Hansel and Gretel. We decked out the outside of the house to replicate a house made of candy to lure the kids inside to the witches lair.

It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun. A few behind the scenes pics!

The best part is that I made good friends on set in Eddie Ross and his partner Jaithan. Yes, the Eddie Ross, although at the time he was just Eddie to me. We worked hard, laughed a lot (our houses were across the street from one another), and have stayed in touch ever since. Here we are in our costumes - poor Eddie was in polyester in very warm weather!

If you are looking for good ideas for your Halloween soiree, I am certain you will find a few on the show! You can see the entire special here.

Can you believe it's already time for Halloween?

RAMBLINGS: JEAN NAYAR

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

I met Jean on my recent trip to NYC and was so honored that she would take the time out of her busy schedule to meet with me and discuss her experience in publishing. To say she is experienced in that world is an understatement. Jean is a journalist and the author of several books on architecture and design. She has served as editor of several decorating and design publications, including House Beautiful, Home Building, and Good Housekeeping Do It Yourself, and most recently served as Editor in Chief of the Woman’s Day Specials, where she produced Kitchens & Baths, Easy Decorating and Remodeling & Makeovers among other magazines. She has written for several consumer magazines, including Interior Design, Child, and Real Simple, and continues to contribute to various blogs and trade publications. An accredited green professional who lives in New York, she is also the founder of a blog called The Happy Home Workshop and is currently writing a book called The Happy Home Project, due to be published by Filipacchi Publishing next spring. She is inspiring, and we share a similar design philosophy. She is definitely a great mentor and an overall interesting woman!

What is your greatest extravagance?
Sleeping later than my husband does.

What career would you pursue if you weren’t doing what you do now?
I think I’d like to be a nurse, but it’s probably too late. So I’d probably go into real estate, but my timing is off for that, too.

Which living person do you most admire?
My mother. She raised five children, then went to law school and started her career as an editor of statutory law when she was almost 50. I find that astonishing. I also think Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama are amazing for their ability to bridge cultural gaps and have a profoundly positive influence on millions of people.

What three things can’t you live without?
My husband, my family, my friends.

What is your guilty pleasure?
A glass of red wine with dinner every night.

What is your favorite color combination?
I like browns and creams with any other color.

What is the favorite room in your house, and why?
The living room next to my home office. It’s at once dramatic and serene.

Overall high LR*

Side 1

Side 2

Dramatic because it’s a double-height space with two large works of art by talented artists, an Indian named Ram Kumar and a Mexican named Ricardo Mazal. It’s serene because of its soothing palette, long, soft curtains and a big tree outside the window that seems to quietly protect it.

What is the most memorable event you’ve attended and why?
My father’s wake. I’ve never experienced such a genuine outpouring of love in my life. The room was filled with what someone called a “joyful roar.” It was as if everyone was drunk on their positive memories of him—except no one was drinking. It was a testament to how deeply he was loved. And it was also interesting to me that my greatest loss was tinged with this particular joy.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
That I was able to put together a Pax organizing system from Ikea by myself—the directions say it’s a two-person job.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Petty partisan bickering.

GREEN WITH ENVY

To say Kelly Wearstler's designs are bold is an understatement.

The lobby at the Viceroy Hotel in Miami is no exception. When I first saw this I was so drawn to how she incorporated Malachite. It spawned a hunt for other ways to embrace Malachite. I would love to have a few of these around our dining room table...

Can't you see this rug with a leather yellow chair in the room?

Dividing a room with this would definitely make an impression. I would also love to use it as a backdrop for a seating area.

Of course, my true passion is table decor, and now I am going to be hunting down this Dior china!

For now, I might just have to settle for this skirt...

BRANCHING OUT

When fall arrives I start to look for ways to bring a bit of the outdoors in, whether it is in a corner of our living room or on the dinner table. Of course the easiest thing to do is to collect branches and gather them in to a tall container using them as a centerpiece.

I think this idea is fabulous, using wheat for your window boxes and hanging a collection of branches above an entrance, almost like a chandelier.

This modern arrangement is amazing - I would love to have this on our front porch - the flowers remind me of the yellow some of the trees are changing right now.

This is a great contemporary arrangement too! I would love a bouquet of dark purple calla's with the rock and the branch - adore.

I have always loved this idea. It has been on my inspiration board for a long time. This is a fabulous way to use a branch -perfect for the upcoming holiday season or truly any glamorous soiree.

What an inexpensive way to bring the outdoors in - hanging branches above the table - it works in this contemporary space.

What is your favorite way to add elements of Fall to your house?

SOME KIND OF BLUE

Often perusing the web I find images that inspire me and send me in to a frenzy. I get passionate about the tiniest element - like this blue knit sweater (and her hair!).

With fall arriving, there is nothing better than curling up in a fabulous knit sweater. Still searching, I saw this room designed by Kendall Wilkinson, and fell in love with the blue and orange combo.

Then I looked back at my post from yesterday afternoon, about velvet, and I saw a bit of foreshadowing to todays post...

Isn't it funny how you are drawn to things and you don't even realize it. Now I'm inspired to find a dresser to paint in this blue for a project - watch out you might find a dresser missing in your house sometime soon. Although it would come back in this lovely shade of blue.

LUXURIOUS VELVET

When I walk in to a room and see a piece of furniture or an accent piece, like an ottoman, I am drawn to it. With the weather changing, it makes me want to curl up on a velvet sofa in a cashmere blanket in front of the fire and take a nap. Not much entices me into the world of napping but these just might.

I adore a Chesterfield sofa.

The clean lines in this room are fabulous, and the velvet sofa seems to ground the room.

A vintage velvet sofa - I'm charmed.

Now, this dog has the life. Maybe it is the dog that makes me want to take a nap.

SUMMING IT UP: I HEART NYC

I have been waiting to write this post because there is so much to share about NYC last week. First of all, I am in love. In love with the city that is. This is the first time I sublet an apartment instead of staying in a hotel. What a difference it makes. After much consideration I will be spending at least one week out of each month in NYC for work and play. This trip was true Kismet. I had a project that coincided with the launch of my new favorite magazine, Rue. So, I was able to meet many of my favorite people in the design blog world, spend some time with old friends, and do a little work too.

After taking the red eye from Seattle and landing at JFK at 6 am, I met up with my assistant Adrian and my friend Cassie to head to my new sublet in Nolita. Designing a dinner party for 14 guests via pictures over the Internet  (this is what I had to work with), can be a bit stressful when you haven't seen the space in person.

As I walked into the space I held my breath until I saw that many of the elements we had worked on in Seattle were a perfect fit for the space.

My friend Bryan was busy at the farmers market in Union Square picking up items for the three course dinner.

http://healthyurbankitchen.com/blog/how-to-shop-at-farmers-market/

Since I had the linen made in Seattle (it's a fashion fabric from Tina's on Madison) and packed the pop art place cards, gold flatware, and antique candelabra's, we had to pick up the acrylic picture frames, and set the table with the remaining rentals. We picked up a few additional items, like the 24" raspberry tapers from Creative Candles, and of course our flowers from Lewis at LMD floral. And, voila!

The entrance - tall vintage candelabra lit with raspberry tapers, and the best part - the view down Spring Street!

The place setting - pop art place card (guess who this is!), gold origami box with napkin inside, and menu card.

The glassware, I chose something contemporary to tie in with the acrylic Ghost chairs that also coordinate with the frames.

It was fun to celebrate with a group of talented design bloggers - just let me say the night ended with heels off and dancing! Always a good sign.

I would be remiss in not mentioning that the very talented Jaime Rummerfield was also one of my dinner guests.  I have always adored her work and her personal style. Little did I know I would also meet the very dapper Ron Woodson at the Rue launch party too.  They are seriously as fabulous in person and sweet too!

I have to say I am not used to taking pictures with people, being new to the blog world I forget how many pictures you all take.  I promise to remember to do so in the future.

The next major event - the Rue Magazine launch party at the NYDC. Cassie and me on our way out the door...

In the cab on the way to JFK to fly home I had this song in my head, and know in my heart that NYC is going to become my second home.

WHIRLWIND WEEK

What a week in NYC! So much to think about and follow up on now that I am home. But first, I need to sort through my luggage.

I find that when I am in NYC I end up working the entire trip and don't make it to some of my favorite spots. ABC Carpet and Home is always fun to explore.

And I have been wanting one of these Color Reform rugs since I first saw them in Elle Decor. I love the fact that they are reinvented vintage rugs.

The other place I missed on this trip is one of my favorite NYC restaurants, Raoul's.

Until next time NYC - thanks for always leaving me wanting more.
