A CLASSIC WAY TO CLOSE OUT THE YEAR

There are very few times in the year that I disappear and take time off from it all, but between now and New Years Day I do my best every year to honor that promise to myself. So, I won't be blogging until 2011!

I'll be getting a lot of much needed sleep...

25044-breakfast-at-tiffanys-sleep-mask_1 copy

...doing a bit of window shopping, re-working a couple of rooms in our house (i.e. deep cleaning and getting rid of things we don't need), and going through my wardrobe to do the same thing.

http://bjeweled.wordpress.com/

Who knows, maybe Tiffany & Co. will be a stop on my list.

We are throwing a dinner party for 16 people on New Years Eve, and I need to shop for that perfect dress so that I am prepared for that midnight kiss.

BQcDAAAAAwoDanBnAAAABC5vdXQKFmR0VUxUSFFDM3hHUThGRGpTaXlqa3cAAAACaWQKAWUAAAAEc2l6ZQ

I have already begun designing the tablescape, and can't wait to put it all together. I am so excited to spend time with my family and friends without my phone ringing, email dinging, or travel calling.

I also spend blocks of time writing, thinking about the year ahead, and where I want to be both personally and professionally.

http://rhinestoneworld.wordpress.com/

I am grateful to be able to take the time off, and look forward to coming back on January 2nd with a renewed spirit and fresh content and reconnecting with you in 2011!

Until then, have a very happy holiday, Merry Christmas, and a fabulous ringing in of the New Year!

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DECORATE A HOLIDAY TABLE FOR $25?

nate berkus show

Yes it is! Check your local listings for my segment on The Nate Berkus Show today. It is my second time on the show, so if you like the segment I would appreciate your support by "liking" my segment on Nate's FB page, Tweeting the segment out to your followers via his web site, and leaving a note on the site to let the producers know you enjoyed it. Every little bit helps!

I will post the segment on the blog once it is posted to his site. Look for behind the scenes video as well, and a blog post with a DIY tree that you can put together at the last minute if you are behind schedule. ;)

ONE FILLED - FOUR TO GO!

Have you ever wondered how many high profile people got their start....

http://www.inc.com/multimedia/slideshows/content/famous-interns_pagen_1.html

Well, we are interviewing for our Intern Program which kicks off in January 2011!

If you are creative, highly motivated, detail oriented and have a passion for design and entertaining then apply . You must be a Junior or Senior in college, or currently enrolled  in an accredited interior design, marketing, pubic relations, graphic design, merchandising, journalism, or communications program. You also must have a drivers license, and preferably have a vehicle at your disposable.  We look for students who enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, aren't afraid to jump in with both feet, and have a creative eye.

Is that you?  Then send a cover letter and resume to info@kelleylmoore.com.

WE'RE HIRING - JACK OF ALL ... DESIGN TRADES

_MG_0125

Are you passionate about entertaining, and interior design? Is your nose in design magazines and blogs all weekend long? Do you find that you are the friend always planning a party, or giving design tips to friends? Can you manage 25 details at once? Is working crazy hours, never knowing what's next, and living on the edge something that drives you - and not away - but leaves you wanting more?  Then read on...

I am in search of the perfect right hand. What does that mean? Well, at times it will mean booking travel, managing schedules, and running to Fed Ex. At other times it will mean brainstorming new design concepts, assisting on a photo shoot, setting up television segments, and traveling with me for National projects.

Sound intriguing?  Email a cover letter and resume to info@kelleylmoore.com.  I would love to know more about you!

WE'RE HIRING - AN EXPERIENCED EVENT MANAGER

Yes, it is true. I am on the lookout for the perfect people to add to my team. I decided to expand and open the doors to my Event Design and Production business. I began designing and producing events many years ago, I worked with clients from Seattle to Paris and then I took a little time off to grow my media business.

Now, my media business is off and running I am in search of a Senior Event Planner to build the division, working with clients to design and produce events that make an impact. From fashion shows to weddings, and executive events to product launches - I am looking for someone that shares my passion for creating experiences instead of throwing a generic party. It's kind of like being a conductor, I suppose...

http://www.seattlemet.com/blogs/culture-fiend/archives/2010-06/2010-07/

...but instead of directing musicians you will be working with and directing talented experts from chefs to florists and everything in between.

I believe that through experience, attention to detail, and relationships with our talented experts, our commitment is to assist our clients in creating an environment and then they can focus on the importance of the celebration and the moments that are created.

So, if you have a passion for creating beautiful environments....

...are the master of all details, and want to be a part of a growing multi-medi company then send an email to info@kelleylmoore.com.

FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD

I love books. Especially design books - I think they make amazing gifts. My friend Tobi Fairley has a great list for those design lovers in your life.

Now, what about those people that you know aren't doing a job they love, or are passionate about something but don't know how to take the steps to make it a career? What if I told you there is a great book that will help that person define their passion, and then will guide them down their very own yellow brick road?

yellow_brick_road

That is exactly what "5." the inspirational five year planning book by Compendium does.

6a00d8341cf8e053ef0120a5fdeb73970c-500wi

I have used it for several years the week between Christmas and New Years to check in and ensure that I still value the same things and want to go in the same direction. Here is a bit of a teaser...

Why not gift wrap it in yellow wrapping paper with white ribbon, adding a tag that says "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."

BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

I landed in Knoxville last night and it was 20 degrees outside. I am excited about what the next few days have in store, but I can't help but think about the next two weeks that I have off to plan for 2011 and enjoy some time with my family and friends. I happen to love the cold, and especially snow this time of year, it brings the kid out in me. So, tonight when I go to sleep I will be dreaming of a White Christmas Eve...

...in a red barn by the water with snow falling outside. There is a big roaring fire, and I am curled up in a blanket by the Christmas tree surrounded by friends and family.

Can't you picture it, minus that lamp!

lodge-christmas--1

In my dream, the rug in front of the fireplace, is this one from Vivienne Westwood - part wool and part cashmere - I can feel my feet sliding over the top just thinking about it.

I have one of these in my hand...

http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2009/12/18/a-gingerbread-house-that-perches-on-the-rim-of-your-mug/

How sweet are these from Not Martha? Mini gingerbread houses that sit on top of a mug of hot chocolate, spiked with something fabulous I am sure.

In the background I can hear the Christmas music I grew up with in the background...

bing_crosby-merry_christmas

Well, in reality, I know I can do the family, friends, music, gingerbread, and hot cocoa! However, that is what 20 degrees makes me dream of, what are you dreaming of this Christmas Eve?

FLAMINGOS IT IS!

Okay, so I have been promising photos from our Flamingo Soiree and with my travel schedule there was a delay, but finally one day in Seattle before a flight to Knoxville gives me a chance to sit down and share this crazy soiree with you.

Screen shot 2010-12-13 at 11.04.09 AM

Now, remember we just expanded in to this space on the water and since many people will be throwing holiday parties that focus on traditional holiday I decided to put together something that was a bit "tongue-in-cheek." Enter 175 flamingos lining the edge of the dock on the water, lit in pink by Brian Waltz of GreenLight Event Design.

Since I wanted to be sure that we had a bit of the same kitsch on the inside of the space that we had outside, I had these vintage wire flamingo bases that Christopher Smith used to create this floral pair. Of course, what party doesn't have disco balls!

Screen shot 2010-12-13 at 11.29.49 AM

There was some traditional holiday decor....

KM-43

In lieu of chandeliers, we strung together inexpensive silver ornaments with a variety of textures from Target (the shatterproof version) and hung them in clusters above the buffet.

The food was amazing, and was created with the modern decor in mind. Brian created the light boxes, and Gourmondo Catering provided the small bites that were perfect for a large soiree.

I seem to never be able to throw a party without my favorite cupcakes in town, Trophy, they never disappoint.

Even my office confidant got in to the spirit...

"O" wines was there to be sure each guest was taken care of, all the while sharing their message of education for women. Yes, wine and education go together, at least in this case. One hundred percent of their profits is put towards a variety of scholarships. If you are looking for the perfect bottle of wine to take to a party this season, this would be it.

KM-39

We created a bubble lounge where people were greeted with cans of Sophia champagne, flamingo straws, and a life size flamingo to pose with - complete with a bathtub, shower curtain, and bubble machines. Don't for the get the dirty and clean signs, and Mr. Bubble!

Who knew so many people could fit in to one chair and a bathtub...

Our guests were also offered a chance every half an hour to tour the Christmas lights via a decorated water sleigh thanks to the The Electric Boat Company. I definitely need to buy one of these in my lifetime. SO much fun.

And, I had to send people home with a swag bag stuffed with holiday goodness, the bags remind me of one of my favorite Florence Broadhurst wallpapers. These are from True Fabrications, they are wine bags, so they have a second use too.

Also a departing gift, a book full of holiday decor ideas and my top ten hostess gifts this year, along with the December issue of Seattle Magazine.

There are so many people to thank. My staff for supporting me during an extremely busy week, Hot Cakes for providing freshly out of the oven Molten Chocolate Cake (mighty good when it's cold out), AA Party Rentals for the chairs, tables, and linens, and Totally Tabletops for the mod glassware, and Jonboy Caramels, Chocolopolis, Halo Salon, and Mogo Bracelets, Beauty Alert, and Dry Soda, for providing our guests with so many wonderful goodies to take home.

A TEASER

Last week I threw a little soiree with a flamingo theme, because our new office space is on the water and it is the holidays, what else would I do?

Once the photographs are edited I will post pics of the decor, and some of the fun, but here is a bit of a teaser...

Yes, we had a flamingo and a bubble lounge with champagne and a bath tub. Can't wait to share all of the details with you!

SOMETIMES IT'S ALL IN THE PACKAGING

I have always said that it doesn't matter how much you spend on a gift, you can always make it special by taking the time to wrap it in a creative way. Look at wrapping as an opportunity to express your personality, or share your favorite color.

Every year I have a signature wrap. Yes, I am one of those people that likes to see unity under the tree. I don't mind different patterns, but stay within the same color palette or make sure they all blend. It is like clothing, you want it to go together. It is part of our holiday decor. This year, I am still searching, but this is my inspiration:

yutquoise-blue-white-silver-christmas-holiday-decor

The idea of wrapping packages in newspaper reminds me of being a kid for some reason, but in this case the newspaper is the consistent theme so the ribbons can be bright and fun...

Want to share your favorite color, or better yet incorporate the receivers fave, paint chips are the answer!

If you are going to do something out of the norm, what better than a paper gingerbread house!

Do you want to mix different patterns but don't know how to make it work? Whimsy makes double sided wrapping paper, so they have done the work for you, each side has a different print with a coordinating color palette.

http://www.whimsypress.com/shop_category_all.php?categoryId=73

Of course, I wouldn't make a fuss if there was a package under the tree that wasn't in our signature paper...

1-hermes_gift_box_orange_with_brown_ribbon

Especially in one of these boxes! Then again, this would work with the aqua/blue that I am working on pulling together for this year.

Looking for something to do with all of those wrapping paper scraps? These mini lanterns would be great hung in a large cluster at different lengths in a corner or over a table for additional holiday decor.

Tis the season to get wrapping!

ANTICIPATION

I remember as a kid loving an Advent Calendar. The anticipation each night of what might be there the next day. Just because we are through the 1st of December doesn't mean its too late. Why not make your own and celebrate the final 12 days before Christmas! It isn't just for kids you know, if you add notes in each box it is fun for a friend or anyone in your life that you want to let know how much you appreciate them. I saw this matchbox version and love it. It is super easy to create and fun to decorate.

http://www.countryliving.com/crafts/projects/craft-ideas-for-christmas-decorations-1209

I think I will start to do these for my friends for their birthday month. It is the perfect size to set on a desk or dresser! I also know a few people graduating this year, and I could totally see this done for someone counting the days to get out of high school or college. What a fun way to make the celebration last longer.

RAMBLINGS: JAMI GOLDSMITH

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

Jami has loved design and decorating since she was building homes with blocks, setting up dollhouses, and rearranging her parent's furniture as a child. Her enthusiasm for design and decorating hasn't changed since her days with Lincoln Logs, and Jami is passionate about sharing her talent with others. A Minnesota native living in sunny southern California, Jami has fine-tuned her design pedigree through completion of her Interior Design degree, numerous design courses, internships, gaining her real estate license and work experience while winning honors for projects she has completed. Jami started Imagine based on a few basic principles. First and foremost, combining her love of working with people and her eye for design, she creates beautiful spaces that exude her client's personality as well as style and functionality. After many years in the business, Jami knows what it takes to turn a house into a home! Her blog, Imagine is one of my daily reads - Meet Jami!

JAMI

What is your greatest extravagance?
Beauty products and pampering myself. I'm not much of a material girl who is attached to name brands bags or the latest designer jeans, but when it comes to make up, shampoo, face wash and lotions, I don't mess around. I relish in being pampered, so massages and trips to the nail salon are a part of my monthly routine.

What career would you pursue if you weren’t doing what you do now?
Holy crap. I've never even given this topic a thought since I always knew that I was going to be an Interior Designer and I'm so happy with what I'm doing. I've been so focused, determined and driven to get where I am today, I've never given much thought to another career path. If design wasn't an option, I'd make more use of my real estate license and become a full time Realtor rather than only part time as I do now.

Which living person do you most admire?
There are many people that have come in and out of my life that have had such positive influences in my life, but I'd have to say that without a doubt, I admire my boyfriend, Nick, more and more every day. He is also an entrepreneur and has shown me that with hard work, dedication and determination, owning my own business and being successful at it is possible. I know that without his support and the example that he has set, I'd be far behind schedule in starting my own interior design company. His patience and generosity astound me.

What three things can’t you live without?
Besides the obvious loved ones and chocolate, I'd say...
1. The California sunshine. I will never again in my life live somewhere with a 6-7 month long winter and below zero temperatures. I love the sun and warmth and the fact that I can wear flip flops year round.
2. Restaurants with access to fresh sushi. Nick and I eat sushi at least once a week. Salmon is my favorite.
3. Exercise and yoga. This is where I go to get away from it all. Not only is it a stress reliever for me, I just feel alive and much more energized in life when I exercise regularly.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Home Goods and Ross are all within a couple miles of my home and I LOVE a good bargain, whether it be on a cute new dress to wear to a party or that perfect vase to set on my table. After shopping, I usually end up at Panera and have a bowl of their mac and cheese.

What is your favorite color combination?
Grey with metallic gold and silver accents. In my next home this will be my color scheme or if we don't move for a while, I'll start to slowly incorporate this into our beige and chocolate brown color scheme we currently have.

What is the favorite room in your house, and why?
I really love my house, all of it. But when it comes down to it, my office is the room where I feel most at home.

Jami space

It used to be our guest room, but I recently converted it into my space where I sketch, draw and skim through design magazines while lounging on the bed. This room also had some of the best views.

What is the most memorable event you’ve attended and why?
I danced at the half time show of the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida circa 1995. My best friend, Marie and I were crazy dance nuts, involved in everything dance. One winter, we competed and won spots to dance at the half time performance of the football game. We worked our little butts off selling meat (yes: steaks, burgers, chops) door to door in the freezing cold Minnesota weather in order to raise enough money for our trip to Miami. It was the first time I flew without my parents and Marie and I totally thought we were so cool. It was one of those milestone moments/memories.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
That I'm from Minnesota and that I've only been living in Southern California for 5 years. Unless my accent slips out, anyone who meets me is shocked that I grew up on a hobby farm 5 miles outside of a small town called Brandon (population = 410). My graduating class had 30 kids.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Gosh, I have so many - HA! Dishes in the sink, Christmas lights up after January 1st, my dark roots growing in after weeks of getting highlights. Besides these particulars, I'd say my biggest annoyance is the LA traffic!

GUEST ROOM DOOR

This time of year many of you have guests visiting, so instead of putting the wreath on the front door why not put it on your guest room door? These are some of my faves.

What a brilliant way to use rock candy...

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes-and-cooking/holiday-wreath-pictures/pictures/index.html

This is a charming way to use felt, and you could spray paint the actual wreath form if you wanted to create a more preppy palette.

http://greeneyed.com/2010/11/diy-t-shirt-pom-pom-garland/

What a sweet way to greet one of your more handsome guests. ;) This is a great Father's Day idea too.

http://diygadgets.blogspot.com/

Looking for a bit of bling, this mirrored wreath from West Elm fits the bill and is an inexpensive way to infuse a bit of glamour into your holiday decorating.

mosaic-mirror_300

Obsessed with the jewel tones of peacock feathers, I keep trying to find a holiday design to include this in...

http://donkeehouse.com/?tag=holidays

This time of year is always so much fun for me. You can find small ways to be creative and use your imagination to deck the halls and not have to spend a lot of money. Wreaths are a great way to do just that.
