A CELEBRATORY WEEK KICKS OFF

This week is full of moments to celebrate, between my birthday and my wedding anniversary I have a feeling that a few bottles of bubbly will be poured. This weekend I spent some time dreaming about how I want to spend my week...

If I were dreaming big, I would fly away with my husband to Paris...

But, instead I am just excited as I would be if we were going to Paris because we are embarking on a new adventure...let me give you a hint...

...yes, we are headed to NYC to peruse neighborhoods and begin planning a year in NYC together. Although Seattle will always be home, we are going bi-coastal for a bit. If you have any suggestions for restaurants, shows, or neighborhoods we shouldn't overlook let me know.

A cute comparison of the two cities I am dreaming of....

BERKUS BUSTERS!

Over the past few weeks I have been traveling to NYC sharing entertaining tips on the Nate Berkus Show. Today, Berkus Busters airs, and Nate and Yvette Brown (from the show Community) break some common entertaining myths. Here's a clip:

You can find the complete segment on Nate's site!  Don't forget to "like" the segment - if you do of course.

My favorite part of taping these segments, are the people that I am blessed to work with along the way. I have become friends with Jim, who works in the Art Department.

His background is amazing, he started working with Martha - enough said. Being surrounded by so much talent from Nate to his entire team is inspiring to say the least.

WINDOW SHOPPING

As you know I've been spending a lot of time in New York lately and I wanted to share a little bit of the inspiration I'm surrounded by here. Window displays have become an art form and the streets of New York hold some of the most stunning examples.
So first in honor of yesterday's holiday, a little red, white and blue inspiration...
And since we're all itching for Spring to begin I just had to share these vibrant Bergdorf windows with you...
And I couldn't help but notice their use of Pantone's Spring 2011 Fashion Report color palette, absolutely gorgeous!

HAPPY [HOUR] FRIDAY

With all the chilly weather outside I thought we could all use a warm cocktail to relax in front of the fireplace with this weekend...

INGREDIENTS

3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup water, plus 2 tablespoons
8 ounces finely chopped semisweet or milkchocolate
6 cups milk
6 ounce cinnamon flavored liqueur (recommended: Goldschlager), see Cook's note
3 ounce golden rum

DIRECTIONS

Stir the sugar and 2 tablespoons of the water together in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cover and bring to a boil over medium heat. Uncover and continue to cook, swirling the pan but not stirring, until the sugar is a dark golden caramel, 7 to 10 minutes. (It should smell slightly burnt.) Pull pan from the heat and carefully pour the 1/4 cup water into the caramel. Take care; it may spatter a lot.Whisk until smooth and allow to cool. (The burnt caramel can be held for up to 2 weeks at room temperature.)

When ready to serve: Put 3 tablespoons of the burnt caramel into 4 mugs or cups and top evenly with the chopped chocolate. Bring the milk to a simmer in a medium pan over medium heat. Pull pan from the heat and add the Goldschlager and rum; pour over thechocolate. Serve El Dorado Hot Chocolates with a spoon to stir the layers together.

RAMBLINGS: ASHLEY V. STEEN

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

Ashley Steen dabbles in all aspects of design. After spending nearly five years at a global advertising agency in New York City designing interactive advertising campaigns, she recently relocated to California. Ashley now divides her time between graphic design, interior design, and event planning. You can follow her adventures as she explores her passion for design through her blog, Orchard 11. Most recently, I have had the opportunity to get to know her because she is the Art Director for High Gloss Magazine! Meet Ashley.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Restaurants! I can be very restrained when it comes to shopping, but I can manage to convince myself that a lavish meal at the latest hot restaurant is a must. I am somewhat of an amateur foodie, plus I love checking out restaurant design- everything from the decor to the matchbooks.

What career would you pursue if you weren’t doing what you do now?
Anthropologist or African wildlife photographer. I love animals, am insanely curious and have an infatuation with everything Africa.

Which living person do you most admire?
Jane Goodall. Back to my obsession with Africa, I am also obsessed with primates, specifically chimpanzees. It's not that I want one as a pet or anything, I'm just fascinated by how intelligent they are. Jane Goodall is responsible for bringing their intelligence to light along with opening so many doors for women in science. She is almost 80 years old and still traveling the world advocating for animals. I hope to be so passionate and determined when I'm her age.

What three things can’t you live without?
Salt, my computer, music. I am shamelessly addicted to salt; I have a bad habit of salting my food before I even taste it. I can't imagine life without the Internet and I also can't work without music BLASTING.

What is your guilty pleasure?
The Internet. I loose myself in the Internet so easily; hours go by and I'm still sitting here at my desk "internetting." Online browsing, instant messaging, facebooking, blogs and ffffound can quickly consume my whole day.

What is your favorite color combination?
My favorite color is chartreuse. I love it with magenta, orange, silver, black, blue- EVERYTHING. My friends affectionately refer to the color as "Steen Green."

What is the favorite room in your house, and why?
Our living room. I love that it is able to capture both my and my boyfriend's personalities.

ashley_steen_living_room

Plus it is a lot bigger than any living room we had in NYC, so we feel like we are living large when we have people over! We found the rug at the Rose Bowl Flea Market; I love the bright colors and funky pattern. The mirror and coffee table (plus a million other things in our house) are also from the flea. I took the photo at the Getty a few years ago while visiting LA and we had it blown up and framed- it reminds me of my first trip to see my boyfriend's hometown.

What is the most memorable event you’ve attended and why?
One of my best friend's just had an amazing black tie engagement party in January. It was held at the Casino Club in Chicago, a very swanky, art deco members only club.

PastedGraphic-1

Every detail, and I mean EVERY, was thought out and perfectly executed. Upon entering the party all the men were given white flower boutineers and the women were handed pearls, sparkly diamond rings and boas. There was a 12 piece band, a photobooth full of props, so much amazing food- the dessert alone included mini milkshakes, a crepe station, mini cakes, and mini sundaes. The white tufted-leather circular bar served multiple "signature cocktails" and there were personalized napkins accompanying them with funny facts about the couple. At midnight a little secret side room opened up with a jazz singer who sang til 3 AM. Themed parties can quickly get cheesy, but this party turned the venue into a participant in the night and perfectly captured the refined elegance of the 20s. I felt like I was at the Vanity Fair Oscar party. This was the first "wedding" of any of my best friends and she definitely set the bar high!

What would people be surprised to know about you?
My middle name, Victoria, is after a family mine. This is what happens when you come from a family of geologists!

What is your biggest pet peeve?
matchy-matchy outfits

LOFTINESS

Lately I have been looking at industrial spaces, and at night I find myself dreaming of what it would be like to live in a space like that for awhile. Here are a few of my faves right now.

Love the treated concrete floor, the black tufted sofa, and the white backdrop, with the little pop of pink in the flowers.

Modern-loft-in-Hong-Kong

This space is much warmer.  Is it the pops of pink again, the washed wood or the white painted brick?

Of course the chandelier pulled me in!

The openess of it all - I just love the idea of spilling from one space to another...

DANCING AROUND

Do you ever feel like you are dancing around your life...

...when sometimes you just need to take a giant leap? If only I could leap as elegantly as Gisele Bundchen! Don't get me wrong I love to dance, but once in awhile there is something inside that tells you to leap.

PRETTY IN PINK

I have adored the color since I stepped in to my grandmothers pink bathroom. A matter of fact, I may be painting our master in ballet-slipper pink with a hint of beige, which keeps it from looking too sweet for my hubby.

Of course, I love all shades of pink...

Pink and navy - a dramatic combo!

This room in February's issue of House Beautiful is delightful!

I've always loved this living room.

And then there is the pink bathroom like my grandmother's of course...

...and everyone looks better with a bit of pink in their cheeks!
