SOMETHING BLUE

Some are a bit tired of hearing about the Royal Wedding - but being someone who is passionate about entertaining I adore a Royal soiree.  So, inspired by the Royal ring...

kate-middleton-ring-300x240

...and the lack of blue skies here in Seattle, I started to think about the options for something blue on such a celebrated day.

I adore a vibrant shoe that peeks out from under a beautiful gown, I think it adds personality!

A hint of blue embroidery inside the dress is a great idea, especially if the dress is handed down.

Interesting choice, a blue bouquet. I am not sure how I feel about this, what do you think? I do love the small photographs attached to the bouquet.

Or you could ensure good luck by wearing an entire dress in blue - this happens to be my wedding dress.

And, who says the something blue doesn't apply to the groom? These were the shoes my husband wore on our wedding day...

...blue suede Ferragamo.

Then again, you could always personalize the bottom of your shoes!

What was your something blue?  If you're getting married, what will it be?

WEDDING HOW-TO'S: CROQUE EN BOUCHE AND PAPER FLOWERS TOO!

With the Royal Wedding this week, I thought I would share a few ideas with you that translate from weddings to dinner parties. Learn to make a beautiful paper flower bouquet, or watch as I make a Croque en Bouche with Lisa Dupar. I also share a few insights in to details of our wedding!  Don't forget to give the video clip time to load - if you have troubles loading the video then catch it here.

Also, a tour of Luly Yangs bridal studio!

Here's the recipe if you want to make the Croque en Bouche that Lisa and Jonathan made:

1) Place the milk, butter, salt, sugar and lemon zest into a pan and bring to simmer and butter is melted.

2) Quickly add flour. Cook until smooth and satiny, about 5-7 min.

3) Put dough into mixer. With paddle, add one egg at a time, blending well after each one.

4) Pipe from a large pastry bag with a ½" tip smooth, even ball-like shapes on a silpat. If there are bumps on the surface of the shapes, you can smooth them with a little bit of egg wash.

5) Bake at 425 for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 375 degrees and bake until puffed up and light golden brown, about 20 minutes more. Do not open the oven door during baking. Let cool on sheet.

Pastry Cream for Cream Puff Filling

Enough for 70 cream puffs equal to 1 foot tall croque en bouche, double the recipe for 2 foot tree

1) Place the milk into a large pot, bring to a boil.

Milk                                32 ounces

Vanilla bean-split           1

2) Combine the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch in a large bowl.

Eggs                             4

Sugar                            8 oz.

Corn Starch                  3 oz.

3) Temper the egg-sugar mixture together with half of the milk. Pour this mixture into the pot with the remaining milk. Bring to a boil, stir constantly. Strain immediately into a stainless hotel pan to cool.

*Note: this basic pastry cream can be "flavored" with various flavorings such as fresh passion fruit.

Caramel For Assembling

6 cups sugar

1 cup water

2 pinches cream of tartar

1)  Place sugar, cream of tartar and water in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until sugar is dissolved. (Do not stir after this point.) Raise heat and allow sugar syrup to cook until it is a ruddy gold in color (345 degrees). Remove from heat and place in a large pan containing boiling water to keep it soft and manageable.

2)  Lift each puff with tongs (or carefully with gloves on hands) and dip the un-pierced side into the syrup. Place syrup side down on a large round serving platter on which a thin layer of syrup has been spread. Make a round of puffs then another ring of puffs on top. Keep building in this manner to form a tall cone. Any remaining caramel can be drizzled over the cone. Be very careful when working with the caramel as it is very hot. Also, do not dip puffs on pierced side or the filling may cause the caramel to not harden properly.

My mouth is watering just thinking about this delicious cake. I know it looks tricky...but give it a try and let me know how it goes!

PARTY LIKE A PRO - OR AT LEAST LOOK LIKE ONE

Looking for some basic things to have on hand to entertain in a heartbeat?  This is a show I did for the holidays, but it can apply to Easter too.  It has a few general ideas that might of interest...plus mixing up drinks with Kathy Casey is always a fun segment.  Hostess ideas are at the end, don't forget to take one to your host/hostess this weekend if you are attending an Easter dinner!  If it takes to long to load, you can find it here too...

RAMBLINGS: THE MOGGIT GIRLS

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

Joy and Janet are lifelong friends who started their blog, moggit.com because they thought the design world was taking itself a little seriously... The blog's tongue-in-cheek approach was an instant hit, and Joy and Janet haven't looked back since! They've been featured in HGTV.com in a series of videos, on The Nate Berkus Show, as well as in numerous prestigious magazines and newspapers including as Canadian fave 'Style At Home' and the Toronto Star, as well as numerous fabulous blogs.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Joy: My AGA cooker. It was a great expense at the time but one that was well worth it.

Janet: I don’t do extravagant. Yet...

What career would you pursue if you weren’t doing what you do now?
Joy: Anything involving working with dolphins and puppies.

Janet: Whatever Joy would be doing (‘cuz I don’t want to work with anybody else!)... so I guess dolphins and puppies.

Which living person do you most admire?
Joy: My Mom hands down. She is the epitome of faith and grace.

Janet: My kids-- all three of them. They teach me new things every day!

What three things can’t you live without?
Joy: Wine, vodka and champagne.  Just kidding - My family, wine and chocolate. ;)

Janet: My answer is trite but true-- my family, my family, and my family.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Joy: Trash/Reality TV. I love RHONY but I’m classy in that I draw the line at the Maury Povich’s and Jerry Springer’s of the world.
Janet: Historical romance novels. There, I said it.

What is your favorite color combination?

Joy: Right now I am loving grey and cream. Not a very exciting choice but very soothing and relaxing.

Janet: Pale yellows and creams... I can never get enough!

What is the favorite room in your house, and why?
Joy: I’d have to say my living room as it is the place where we all hang out. There’s room enough for all of us and it’s where we like to kick back, watch tv, listen to music and generally get on each other’s nerves.

Janet: My bedroom. It’s still very much a work in progress, but it’s my refuge form the world-- and my kids! ;)

What is the most memorable event you’ve attended and why?
Joy: My parent’s 50th wedding anniversary party. It was a beautiful, hot sunny day in July and we were surrounded by family and friends to celebrate. My parents were beyond thrilled and it was an honor to host a party celebrating such a milestone in their lives. The cleaning up part afterwards I coulda done without...but hey... ;)

Janet: Going on a couples trip to NYC with my hubby and my BFF... not really an ‘event’ but a definite highlight for me!

What would people be surprised to know about you?
Joy: I have been known to willingly eat the occasional freeze-dried grasshopper.

Janet: I can tie a cherry stem into a knot-- without using my hands. It’s a gift.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Joy: Old men who whistle and think everyone around them is enthralled. The only person that enjoys whistling is the whistler!

Janet: When people crunch chips in my ear.

WHY I LOVE TO ENTERTAIN

I was being interviewed for an article yesterday and one of the questions the interviewer asked me was, "why do you like to entertain." My response was that from the time I was a little girl my parents threw parties and friends gathered around the table for long conversations and I recall lots of laughter and music. Why wouldn't you LOVE to entertain.

I said, I have never thrown a party and not seen people smiling and happy. Who doesn't want to spread happiness? It is like giving a gift.

I threw my first surprise party when I was eight or nine, for my mom, her reaction as she came in to the door says it all...

Keep throwing parties, having people over for dinner, and gathering your friends and family - it truly is what life is all about - giving back.

SOIREE SPECTRUM: AQUA

In honor of the blue skies that are finally gracing us with their presence, some aqua inspiration...

ECLECTIC WEDDED BLISS

This weekend I was searching for unique wedding designs this weekend to inspire me as I work to design one of the most important weddings I have designed in my career, outside of my own. Through my search for weddings that bring a bold impact to the environment I wan in to this wedding on Junebug''s Wedding site. The colors are so dramatic and the table the perfect eclectic mix.

Anytime I see cut crystal glassware on tables it makes me happy....

exotic-old-world-nautical-wedding-decor-kristin-banta-miki-and-sonja-3

I adore the mix of objects with floral in the center of the table.  It helps
to tell a story, and give guests something to start conversation about.

The well dressed chair - WOW - that just took my breath away.  In small doses if that were to be at the head of each table, what a special way to acknowledge those that have done something special in your lives.

I'm always a fun of creating casual areas, or separating spaces with
fabric.  Throughout this wedding you can see how much fabric they have used, and the variety of fabric which makes  it even more interesting.

The out door fireplace and seating area provides people with the opportunity to have a conversation that is more private - maybe two of your single friends want to walk off to get to know one another. ;)  Perfect set up for that to happen.

The mix of fresh herbs on the tables, along with berries, flowers. and colored glass.  It takes a talented designer to mix it up in a way that
it works and frankly for this wedding it works.

Inspired by the exotica of old-world sea ports, this designer combined nautical elements, the eclecticism of gypsy travelers and a rich and dramatic color palette of navy, cinnamon and orange with hints of celadon and gold to create a fantasy-filled environment for this wedding at Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs, California.

I adore that it isn't traditional  - it's fun and dramatic and is definitely a place to celebrate the night away!

THE KIDS TABLE - EASTER DECOR

Decorating the kids table is the perfect opportunity to spend time with the kids decorating, and be a kid yourself. This year when I was thinking of a way to reinvent the table for kids this Easter I remembered the book Green Eggs and Ham.

green_eggs_and_ham_cover

The orange, green, and pops of yellow, are vibrant and are not the traditional pastel palette - which I love as a bit of a twist. Each place setting is a green egg, made of white felt and a green melamine plates.

G and H 6

Each child becomes a character in the book via the place card, and who doesn't love a bowl of Jelly Belly's!

G and H 3

"Sam I Am" jumps across mounds of wheat grass, and the fox and the box are there too....

The miniature iron skillets have individual sugar cookies with a green M & M melted in the center to create a tasty green egg for the kids to take home - or the parents to devour! Okay, I ate a few in the creation of this blog post.

WHEN YOU ARE A PERFECTIONIST...REMEMBER

One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received!

RAMBLINGS: CHRISTIANE LEMIEUX

Along the road of my career and travels, I've been extremely fortunate to meet and work with an array of incredibly talented people. Ramblings is my way of picking their brain for more insight and juicy tidbits to share with you.

Christiane Lemieux is the creative mind behind Dwell Studio, a modern home furnishings company that produces fresh patterned textiles and timeless furniture. She also recently authored UNDECORATE, a book dedicated to showing readers how to let go of old decorating guidelines and design from the heart. Here Christiane gives us a little peak into her world...
What is your greatest extravagance?

Sleep/time off with my family – it’s great if that happens together but it never does.

What career would you pursue if you weren’t doing what you do now?

I would actually love a second career.  I want to be a doctor.  Two of my closest friends are doctors and I am still trying to convince them to let me wear scrubs and shadow them in the ER.  They keep saying no but I will keep trying. They bought me this clever book so I can legitimately sound like I know what I am talking bout...
Also, I have flown a plane with an instructor exactly twice but I would love to get my pilots license.  I would like to be a pilot/doctor for my next career.  Medevac maybe?

Which living person do you most admire?

I admire people who change the world and there are many... From someone like Anthony Lake the Executive Director of UNICEF – who helps children all over the world – to philanthropists like Bill an Malinda Gates who are putting a stop to childhood malaria.

What three things can’t you live without?

My family (dog included)
New York City
My company (because I can’t imagine a day without the amazing people I work with...for real)

What is your guilty pleasure?

Buying whole seasons of TV shows like Mad Men on ITunes and watching hours of back to back episodes...(this usually happens on a plane).

What is your favorite color combination?

This changes daily but right now I am pretty inspired by some of the colors that Carolina Herrera put together in her latest 2011 runway collection. I loved her mix of amethyst and aqua.  It feels fresh and hip.

What is the favorite room in your house, and why?

I live in a loft apartment in NYC so we all hang out in the kitchen/living room/den.  My kids do everything from race scooters to build forts in this big open space.

What is the most memorable event you’ve attended and why?

My wedding was very memorable (see honey – I remembered)  but when I graduated from Parsons I got to attend the CFDA’s.  Tom Ford complimented my dress (which I had actually bought at a vintage store that morning) – TOM FORD ...He had just come off his first couple of Gucci collections...He is a style icon of mine. I will never forget how glamorous the evening was.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I will eat anything – from alligator to snake gall bladder... I have tried it. That is one of the great benefits of travel.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

People who take themselves too seriously.

SITTIN' ON THE DOCK OF THE BAY

I absolutely loved my last office space. The industrial loft, the character of it all. I remember when I painted the door red and put the white "K" on the door. Then I ran in to this space with bad carpet, boring white walls, but those things can be changed when your on the water. The moment I signed the lease I had dreams of happy hours on our dock. Immediately after moving in I bought this vintage patio set...

1470-600x450

We moved in to the new office in October, and now with the sun peeking out it is time to think about having the cushions made so guests have a place to sit and sip bubbly. I love Trina Turks new outdoor fabrics but can't decide between all of the fabulosity!
